Air Raid Damage East End

Air raid attacks on the London Docks by bombers from the German air force, the Luftwaffe, began on 7 September 1940. The raids, which became known as The Blitz, continued until May 1941. Over 20,000 Londoners died and 1.5 million homes were destroyed or damaged. This photo, taken in the East End of London on 19 September, 1940, shows a homeless family plucking a chicken.
