Swales

Alonzo Beaumont Swales (1870-1952) was born in Middlesborough and served an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. He joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in 1890 and served in various local posts until elected as district organiser in 1912. He was a member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union Executive Council 1920-1935 and President of the TUC in 1925. During the 1926 General Strike he was a member of the Special Industrial Committee (later the Negotiating Committee) which handled most of the TUC negotiations, and chairman of the TUC Intelligence Committee.
