George Howell (1833-1910) was first a shoemaker and then a bricklayer by trade. He was an active Chartist and then formed the London Order of the Operative Bricklayers Society. He was secretary of the London Trades Council 1861-1862 and of the Reform League 1865-1869, also serving on the Executive of the latter's successor, the Labour Representation League.
