William Allan (1813-1874) Founding member 1851 and first secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Machinists, Smiths, Millwrights and Patternmakers (known as the Amalgamated Society of Engineers - ASE) - a 'New Model' union. Allan joined the Reform League in 1865, gave evidence to the Royal Commission on Trade Unions in 1867 and was an active member of the London Trades Council from its formation in 1860. He became treasurer of the Trades Union Congress in 1871 and remained General Secretary of the ASE until his death.
