The Federation was formed in 1881 by H.M. Hyndman, a leading British Marxist. In 1884, it changed its name to the Social Democratic Federation. Also in 1884, there was a split in the organisation with William Morris and others leaving to form the Socialist League. The card was designed by William Morris.
