'Cleave's Penny Gazette of Variety', 12 May 1838

'Cleave's Penny Gazette of Variety', 12 May, 1838 with portraits of five of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs, who had recently returned from transportation in Australia. The publisher of the Gazette was John Cleave (1795?-1850) a Chartist and an activist in various radical campaigns including the abolition of stamp duty on newspapers. He was a leading figure in the London Working Men's Association and the National Charter Association.
