The Osborne Judgement arose out of a case brought by W. Osborne, Secretary of the Walthamstow Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, who claimed it was illegal to impose a 'political levy' on union members for the support of its sponsored candidates elected to Parliament. The decision was a clear attack on Labour Party MPs who, unlike Conservative and Liberal members, had no private means to support them.
