Following the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany in June 1941, the TUC formed an Anglo-Soviet Trade Union Committee and a "Help for Russia" Fund, coordinated by the National Council of Labour. By June 1942, collections and fund-raising activities by unions, Labour Parties and the cooperative movement had already raised over £300,000 and the first consignments of clothing and medical supplies were shipped to N.Shvernik, secretary of All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions in Moscow.
