In 1973, the Conservative Government introduced the Counter Inflation Act to regulate prices and incomes. 55,000 hospital ancillary workers were involved in selective stoppages in support of an increase of £4 a week and rejection of £1+ 4%, the maximum allowed under government pay policy. The TUC produced this leaflet, "The Filthiest Sheets in Britain" , which also appeared as an advert in national newspapers in March 1973, and suggested that hospital workers might be treated as a special case and not used as a precedent in other wage claims. There was no positive response from the Government and after 6 weeks the strike action was suspended in April following a pay settlement within the policy.
