In 1981, the National and Local Government Officers union submitted a claim for the regrading of typists and other local authority clerical workers. This circular from the Manchester NALGO Branch to members suggests industrial action which might be taken in support of the claim including "typing no more than 35 words per minute" and " returning all illegible scripts". After 30 typists were suspended for their work-to-rule action in Liverpool, some 80 members of staff came out on strike, only returning after 23 weeks when the claim was submitted to arbitration.
