Interview with Barbara Castle, part of the TUC Millennium Film Project
Barbara Castle (1910-2002) was born in Chesterfield and worked as a journalist before becoming MP for Blackburn in the 1945 General Election. She held several posts in the 1964-1970 Labour Government, including Secretary of State for Employment from 1968. She was again a minister in the Wilson Government 1974-1976, but stood down as an MP in the 1979 election to become a Member of the European Parliament 1979-1989. In 1990, she was made a life peer, as Baroness Castle of Blackburn.
